We give details of better airconditioned accommodation choices below; for ratings, click "stay" above. You can call to reserve at listed numbers, but except for Sichang View and Tiew Pai you'll need to speak Thai or do it by e-mail through Pan & David. Allow at least 48 hours for a response to your e-mail: since we don't ask for any money from you or the operators, we aren't always on the ball... so you should definitely confirm room rates before you move in.
Reservations aren't necessary except on long weekends and major holidays (New Year, Chinese New Year, Songkran), but if you want a shot at the best rooms, don't leave it till Saturday afternoon. You should plan on paying cash for your room at check-in. There is an ATM on the island, but the only place you can use a credit card is Pan & David, where we take Visa and Mastercard. Immigration authorities on the island are generally pretty relaxed, but it's still a good idea to have at least a photocopy of your passport on hand. Prices are going up for year-end! About 250 meters north of the entrance to Rama V Palace (number 7 on the map page), Rim Talay surrounds Pan & David Restaurant on three sides. There is good bed linen available if you ask in advance. Rooms 15 - 22 in the new "Tuk Mai" building are comfortable and clean, with very firm mattresses. The converted barges have lots of charm, but show their years here and there. On the west coast of the island, a ten-minute samlor ride from the Rama V palace anchorage and five minutes from the town center (location 2 on the map page), Sichang View offers well-maintained, spacious and comfortable rooms in a beautifully kept garden. Immediately adjoining is the Khao Khaad clifftop park with spectacular sunset vistas of the sea and many good corners for a late-night beer. Hidden away on a wooded hillside lane 200 meters
before Pan & David Restaurant (letter A on
the map
page), our friends Tik and Hartley at House of Dreams offer visitors
two air-conditioned rooms in their own brand-new house--one large, one very large,
both opening on a spacious porch with a wonderful view of the harbor
and distant mainland. Internet access on Tik's laptop is available in
the afternoon and evening via GPRS. Tel.

Right in the center of town (number 5 on the map page), this is the only hostelry with a swimming pool, airconditioned coffeeshop, and billiards hall. Sea view rooms have a good to great view of the lively harbor and Ko Khaam Yai. They are not large, but well appointed and generally very well maintained. Ko Sichang's first tourist establishment was the Tiew Pai Guesthouse, where we spent many a pleasant weekend in the early 1980's. The bungalows in a wooded park are newer, and offer a good bargain, plus seclusion surprisingly accessible to the center of town. Number 6 on the map page.
